Cross-Country Skiing
The Enontekiö region has a total of approximately 200 km of natural cross-country skiing trails. Enontekiö has three cross-country skiing centres: Hetta, Kilpisjärvi and Ylikyrö’s Vuontispirtti.
Hetta has 120 km of maintained trails, 10 km of which is lit, with 3 km being so-called lit, warmer trails. The trail network is at its most expansive during the springtime, from March to mid-April. In the spring, trails are also made to the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park travelling through Pallas and Olos. The Vuontispirtti surroundings have around 50 km of well maintained trails, as does Kilpisjärvi. The Kilpisjärvi skiing season lasts right through to June. The ‘last snow’ trail located on the Jeahkats fell slopes is intended to be kept open for the traditional Kilpisjärvi Midsummer Skiing event.
There are great facilities for telemark skiing in Enontekiö, as over 60% of Finland’s fells are located in the municipality. The most accessible destinations can be found in the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, which you can reach from Hetta or Vuontispirtti and Kilpisjärvi. In addition to the aforementioned, fell skiing may also be done in the wilderness regions of the Arm of Finland (Käsivarsi) and Pöyrisjärvi. You can arrange to be taken by snowmobile to the wilderness regions for skiing by contacting an activity programme company.
You can hire skiing and hiking equipment from the local tourist companies or from Hetan hiihtomaa.
