Canoeing

Enontekiö has around ten different rivers and lakes perfect for waterway recreation. Detailed route descriptions and rapid water section classifications for the most demanding of canoeing rivers, Lätäseno and Könkämäeno – Muonionjoki and Tornionjoki are available. Canoeing down Lätäseno is often started from the Skadjajärvi or Porojärvi Lakes, that are reached by hydroplane or helicopter.

Pöyrisjärvi Lake, the source of the Pöyrisjoki River is reached by all terrain vehicle departing from Näkkälä or by hydroplane from Hetta. The River Ounasjoki canoeing route begins from the eastern side of Lake Ounasjärvi (Hetta in Enontekiö) and is excellent for recreational canoeing. A couple of waterway routes worth mentioning for recreational waterway use are the Käkkälöjoki and Palojoki rivers.

Before entering the terrain, you should ask for more information on the water situation, terrain transportation and accommodation alternatives. The Recreation and Canoeing Division of the Finnish Canoe Federation recommends reading the Safety Guidelines for Paddling.


Canoeing Routes

  • Könkämäeno - Muonionjoki – Tornionjoki; length 537 km, descent 473 m, demanding canoeing and boating route, descent 473 m, 124 classified rapid water sections  
  • Poroeno – Lätäseno; length 115 km, descent 253 m, very demanding canoeing and rubber boat route, wilderness river from Lake Porojärvi to Markkina, a dream route for fly-fishing enthusiasts  
  • Palojoki River; from Lake Palojärvi to River Palojoki estuary 65 km, rather easy canoeing river for early summer
  • Näkkäläjoki River; from Näkkälä to Hetta 25 km, easy early summer canoeing route 
  • Pöyrisjoki River; from Pöyrisjärvi Lake to Vuontisjärvi Lake 45 km, reasonably easy early summer canoeing route, more information on canoeing routes  
  • Ounasjoki River; from Hetta to Ketomella 30 km, from Ketomella on to Rovaniemi 270 km, reasonably easy canoeing river, numerous starting and finishing options, more information on canoeing routes
  • Käkkälöjoki River, from Kalmakaltio to Peltovuoma road 30 km, from Peltovuoma road to Ketomella 20 km, easy canoeing river from early summer to August, may also be started from Peltovuoma
